Hatley was recruited by Nicola Murray to become her advisor when she was elected as Leader of the Opposition. Murray originally asked Hatley to be her advisor when she was selected to be Secretary of State for Social Affairs and Citizenship but Hatley refused, leading to Murray instead employing Glenn Cullen and Ollie Reeder, previous minister, Hugh Abbot's staffers, as her advisors. After Murray's resignation from the leadership of the Labour Party, Hatley remained as her advisor.
